MISSION

NANOWorks Opera develops and stages short contemporary operas by emerging North American composers and dedicates itself to raising the spotlight on young composers and librettists to give them a stepping stone to national attention. As an educational festival, NANOWorks cultivates new works and stages performances with talented singers and instrumentalists dedicated to new music. In producing these operas, NANOWorks will build a generational and cultural bridge between traditional opera lovers and those younger art audiences seeking a fresh new perspective.

PRACTICE

How do we achieve our mission? Each fall, we accept applications from emerging composers from composers and librettists, and select several to produce based on engaging musical content, interesting librettos, and dramatic potential. Our team provides individual consultations with a composer, conductor, and stage director to best edit the work for a fully staged performance. At the same time, we accepted application from promising conductors and stage directors who act as fellows during the workshop, learning the ropes of working with composers and librettists to facilitate the dynamic world of new opera.

We hire talented singers and musicians dedicated to working with living composers and adept at performing in contemporary musical languages to achieve the vision of our composers and librettists.

During the workshop, we rehearse with singers and chamber ensemble to fully stage the short operas. We also engage with composers, librettists, and performers on burgeoning career issues facing the field, and interact with other local arts organizations. The workshop culminates in a public performance of the works that also receives audio and visual recording, so all members can build their portfolios.
